I look at situations around me, and I generally feel pretty grateful compared to what some people go through. But when sleep apnea started affecting my life, I realised that even something as basic as breathing during sleep deserved serious attention.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea involves repeated breathing interruptions during sleep. There are three types:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (most common) — throat muscles over-relax and block the airway
  • Central sleep apnea — the brain fails to send the right signals to breathing muscles
  • Mixed sleep apnea — a combination of both

My symptoms were classic: chronic fatigue throughout the day, loud snoring my partner could hear from the next room, and occasionally gasping awake without knowing why. Left untreated, sleep apnea is linked to serious complications including hypertension, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes — so getting it addressed wasn’t optional.

What Is a CPAP Machine?

CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. The device is made up of three components: a motor, a hose, and a mask. The motor generates a stream of pressurised air, which travels through the hose into the mask — worn over the nose or mouth — and keeps the airway propped open throughout the night.

My first reaction was scepticism. It looked like a lot of equipment to wear to bed. But the results changed my mind quickly.

The Benefits I Experienced

Within the first week, I noticed:

  • Dramatically better sleep quality — I was reaching deeper sleep stages I clearly hadn’t been hitting
  • No more gasping episodes — the interruptions simply stopped
  • Snoring gone — my partner confirmed it immediately
  • Real daytime energy — for the first time in years I didn’t need to fight through the afternoon

Beyond the immediate quality-of-life improvement, consistent CPAP use also reduces long-term risk of heart disease and stroke — a meaningful benefit for anyone with moderate or severe sleep apnea.

Getting Started with CPAP

The process is straightforward:

  1. See your doctor and describe your symptoms
  2. Complete a sleep study — either in a clinic or with a home testing kit
  3. Get a prescription for the appropriate machine and pressure settings
  4. Choose your mask — full-face, nasal, or nasal pillow options exist depending on how you breathe
  5. Set up the machine by connecting the hose to the motor, fitting the mask, and using the ramp function (which gradually increases pressure so you fall asleep more comfortably)

Tips for Adjusting to CPAP Therapy

The first few nights are the hardest. A few things that helped:

  • Wear the mask during the day for short periods while reading or watching TV — it normalises the sensation before you’re trying to sleep
  • Adjust the straps carefully — snug enough to seal, but not so tight it leaves marks
  • Clean the mask and hose regularly — bacteria build-up affects both hygiene and seal quality; follow the manufacturer’s cleaning schedule

If fatigue persists after several weeks of consistent use, go back to your doctor. The pressure setting may need adjusting, or there may be an underlying issue worth investigating.

Insurance and Travel

Most health insurance plans cover CPAP machines with a physician’s prescription — it’s worth checking your plan before assuming you’ll pay out of pocket. For travel, modern machines are compact and come with travel cases. Check airline regulations if you plan to use it on a flight.

The Broader Picture

Sleep apnea is more common than most people realise, and it’s consistently undertreated. If you recognise the symptoms — loud snoring, morning headaches, waking unrefreshed, excessive daytime sleepiness — the path forward is clear: see a doctor, do the sleep study, and take the results seriously.
